Background of Kota Tinggi Tourism

This district is famous for its tourist destinations not only for the state of Johor and Malaysia, but also well known in the neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Indonesia. It is here that the history of the Johor Malay Sultanate began.

It was greatly influenced by Malaka, Johor-Riau, Singapore and Linggi civilisations. Sungai Johor which flows through this town has kept a lot of history on the Ancient Johor glorious years.

There are a lot of historical remains and sites from the time of the rulers of the Ancient Johor which are still standing; such as Makam-Makam Lama (the ancient tombs) and Kota-Kota Lama (the ancient cities). Because this town is rich in the preservation of history, Kota Tinggi is known as the “Daerah Pelancongan Bersejarah” or The Historical Tourism District

Kota Tinggi is also known as a historical town because the Sultanate of Johor was established here. Many historical tombs are found here including the famous Makam Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang (the tomb of the last sultan of the Malaccan Sultanate line), Makam Bendahara Tun Habib Abdul Majid and Makam Tauhid in Kampung Makam. Makam Laksamana Bentan is located in Kampung Kelantan.

The town itself is of little interest, but the waterfalls at Lombong, located 16 kilometers north-west of town are popular tourist destinations.

The waterfalls are 36 meters high, and are located at the base of the 634 meter high Gunung Muntahak mountain. The cool river water drains through a series of shallow pools ideal for swimming. The natural beauty of some parts of the location has somewhat been spoiled by resort development with artificial landscaping.

There are also many beaches along the coastal part of Kota Tinggi. The most popular beaches are Tanjung Balau, Desaru and Batu Layar ('sail rock'), which are 58 km, 55 km, and 62 km from Kota Tinggi town respectively. Chalets and hotels offering reasonable rates can easily be found along the beach.

Teluk Sengat, located 25 km east of Kota Tinggi town is the popular seafood village among tourists, especially those from Singapore. It also located the Johor Lama villlage - The old village or town of Johore where almost everything about Johore history were begin here. Take about 1 hours trip from the city of Kota Tinggi or 2 hours from Johor Bahru, visitord are advise to spend their day here, not only about the historical place but the food and view were nice. There was a major floood here, this flood reached to the top of doorways in some places!

Kota Tinggi is a district which is famous with historical tourism products and sea-based handicraft work. It is also widely popular with various types of seafood.

The Kota Tinggi District Council Tourism Unit has also encourages the public, and students to visit Kota Tinggi. The Kota Tinggi District Council Tourism Unit has drafted various visitation packages for foreign and domestic tourists.
